The almost 800-year old Hanseatic city is the economic and cultural centre of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, stretching along the Warnow to the Baltic Sea and surrounded by a rich, natural landscape. Directly to the north, on the Baltic Sea, lies the city district of Warnemünde. The former small fishing village today bears the title “state recognised seaside resort” and is a highly popular and very exclusive excursion destination. The Baltic seaside resort is famous for its wide, white sandy beach. Events such as the internationally renowned sailing regatta “Warnemünder Woche” and the “Hanse Sail” festival draw millions to the city every year and have made a name for the spot across the borders. Rostock’s historic city centre is characterised by the facades of impressive Hanseatic merchants’ houses. Rostock is popularly referred to as the "city of the seven towers" in reference to the town hall with its seven spires. Art lovers are in their element in the art hall, the history of art museum and the Munch-Haus in the Warnemünde district. Rostocker Heide boasts well developed cycle routes and footpaths, which provide an excellent opportunity to spend leisure time outdoors. Ferries run from the port of Überseehafen to Scandinavia, whilst Rostock-Laage airport connects the city with many national and international destinations. As an economic centre, the city benefits from its port as well as tourism, its excellent infrastructure and the renowned university.
